Betty asks…
pregnant cat questions…?
ok this is my first pregnant cat-well technically shes supposed to be my MILs cat but shes never really been partial to her and now that my MILs out of town “Stevie” has basically claimed me as hers. Ive been around other cats but they’ve always been either spayed or neutered. and yes…if my MIL ever does forfiet “Stevie” to me i do plan on getting her spayed….(my husband and i plan on getting her spayed asap after the kittens are born if my MIL is still out of town).
ANYWAY, so “stevie” has always followed me around and always been lovable, but lately shes been excessively lovable–evidence: shes jumped into my hubbys lap 2 evenings in a row and multiple times throughout the day yesterday…shes NEVER done that with him. Shes also been more vocal…usually she only meows when she escapes outside (yes i said escape…shes supposed to be an indoor cat, but nobody but me really enforces it..hence her getting prego) and wants back in or when shes hungry. Stevie usually sleeps either in my daughter’s room at the foot of the bed or in our room on our bed. Last night she slept right next to my chest and the last few nights shes either slept on the floor in the middle of our room or in te hallway. Oh and shes been hanging out more downstairs-which is weird bc shes usually always in my room or my daughters when shes inside.
Now that you’ve got the basic back story of the last week …(srry this is so long).
Well the other day-the last time she let me get close enough to her stomach- her nipples were obviously larger and pinker but had like white dry-like spots on them and the hair immediatly around it looked like it was either pushed back or not growing around it. You can slightly see something like the kittens moving around every now and then-but you have to really concentrate for a few minutes. She’s DEFINATLY restless. She’s shedding like crazy. She’s DEFINATLY more vocal especially when my daughter’s laying down-whether its nap time or bed time and during the night. She’s gassy (or at least she was last night). And then when i picked her up from in front of the bathroom door (she refused to move for like 10 minutes) it seemed like her butt or her tail was wet enough to get my hand wet in a couple spots but there was no coloration on my hand when i looked and it felt weirder (more gel like) than water/urine.
Ive read in nauseum info on pregnant cats and their behaviours and such. And ive made up a couple spots for her to “nest” (my closet being one of them, and one in the hallways closet) but neither of them she seems to like all that well. The last couple of days shes been like laying on her stomach with her hind legs up and her butt kind of in the air and her back twitching/jerking.
Im just wondering if all of this is normal for a cat. And i have a few questions like:
*What could the wet stuff be when i picked her up?
*What signs exactly should i be looking for when she goes into labor?
*Whats with the back twitching/jerking? (shes never had any fleas or ticks)
*How far along do you think she might be? How long do you think she might have left? (***I’d take her to a vet to make sure how far she is…but the last two cats my MIL has had IVE been the one investing in them-food, vet, litter, litter boxes/scoops, etc.- only to have my MIL just “set them free“. It sounds horrible, but i dont want to invest tons of my money only to have this cat be set free as well…but i WILL take mommy and babies to get checked after shes given birth***)
Any help would be appreciated….oh sorry, my MIL found “Stevie” last July and she wasnt super young but she was still a kitten at that point. So im assuming that she’s either a year or close enough to being a year old now. And she hasnt had any medical problems as far as i know.

Our cats always had their babies totally without our help but if your concerned about her I would take her to a vet

How bad is beer when loosing weight?
I happened to get 4 bottles of the weight loss supplement Lipofuze for free. I have been taking them every week and following the slim fast plan as well I have been loosing a pound a day. The balanced meal I eat is not always balanced. A meatball sub here, an Italian sandwich here. Some pasta alfredo there. You get the idea. But I am still shedding pounds rather easily.
My question is that I just recently began brewing my own beer again and in about 5 weeks I will have a case of beer that I made and am going to want to drink. Also around Christmas I am upgrading to an all grain brewery and will have even more beer around. I know I shouldn’t if I am trying to loose weight but how bad for weight loss is a few beers once in a while? I promise not to drink more than 4 or 5 a week. Do you think my weight loss will cease?
Sorry for such a long question.
I could make a light brew but most of the lite beers I would be making would be lagers and I dont have a frementation fridge at the moment. I probably will have one when I get my keg setup but that won’t be for a few months. But making lite beers would be a great idea if I am still on the diet and pills at that time.
admin answers:
Um, it depends on the beer content. Obviously low carb beers would be better, but I’m guessing since you brew your own, you’d know a lot more about beer than me. But the thing about fat loss is getting a caloric deficit. So if you drink beer, and therefore have more calories, all that means is you need to exercise more to offset the additional calories from the beer.
Just wanted to say that you can buy carb blockers. They supposedly bind to carbs in your gut, and stop them from being absorbed into your body, so the carbs get excreted. I’ve never tried them personally, so I couldn’t recomend one, but have a look if you want.

Oh, and nice score on the 4 free bottles!

Congress never wanted to advertise the achievement of any political leaders other then Nehru-Gandhi dynasty………….

Steven asks…
Are our politicians grasping for all the wrong answers on the economy? Makework job creation?
” With attention turning to the next big economic stimulus package, questions are still swirling about our economic troubles. How did we get here? How do we get out? As usual, Washington has all the wrong answers.
According to many politicians, we got here by not spending enough, not consuming enough, and not regulating enough. Now government, like some mythical white knight, is going to ride in to save the day by blanketing the economy with dollars, hiring an army of new bureaucrats, creating make-work jobs, and sending everyone some form of a bailout check.
The debate seems to focus on whether this will cost enough to save the economy, or if this is just a “down payment” with much more government spending to come. Talk like that would be comical, if the results weren’t going to be so tragic.
Worsening Economic Woes Ahead
The results will be worsening economic woes until we learn our lesson. But instead Congress is behaving like drug addicts who must hit rock bottom before they are ready to face reality. They are playing foolish games with the economy now because they are thinking only of political expedience. This talk of job creation is a perfect example.
Contrary to the belief of many, the goal of the economy is not job creation. Jobs can be a sign of a healthy economy, as a high energy level can be a sign of a healthy body. But just as unhealthy substances can artificially give the addict that burst of energy that has nothing to do with health, artificially created jobs just exacerbate our problems.
The goal of a healthy economy is productivity. Jobs are a positive outcome of that. A “job” could be to dig a hole one day, and fill it back up the next, or perhaps the equivalent at a desk. This does no one any good.
“The Austrian school of economics teaches that only a free market economy, unencumbered by onerous government controls, creates long-term prosperity. Politicians, however, tend to be notoriously short-sighted.”
But the value in that paycheck ultimately has to come from taxing someone productive. Some think this round-robin type of economic model is supposed to get us somewhere.
Politicians and bureaucrats have already done their fair share to ensure that jobs in the private sector are prohibitively complicated and expensive to create. They are now shocked that the economy is shedding jobs, and want to simply create hundreds of thousands of jobs to make up for the job losses, through another so-called economic stimulus package.
The private sector must be permitted to do that, but instead they are massively burdened with taxes and webs of red tape and regulation. Washington’s bandaids will only prolong this agony.
Long-Term Prosperity / Short-Sighted Gains
The Austrian school of economics teaches that only a free market economy, unencumbered by onerous government controls, creates long-term prosperity. Politicians, however, tend to be notoriously short-sighted.
I am left with these questions – who is going to be left standing to tax in the private sector to pay for all these public sector make-work jobs? Is Washington really to be considered some sort of savior for creating unproductive jobs in place of the productive jobs they eliminated?
We are at an economic dead-end and those in power are in denial.
The truth is our economic problems are due to loose monetary policy, central economic planning, and the parasitic expenses of government. Unless we assess these problems honestly, we unfortunately have a long way to go until, like the junkie, we hit rock bottom.

I can’t believe my eyes that the news said that Obama is using an out dated theory on economics , the Keynsian Economics. We have never left Keynsian economics. Bush created the low unemployment rate by increasing government spending, via the military. THe rule for Keynsian economics is to create jobs , by taking a temporary debt to use for govenrment programs. THe problem is that this is not a TEMPORARY debt, when we never gotten out of debt. The problem is the politicians believe they have to do something, no matter if the thing they plan to do would be disasterous. I have told people for a long time what is wrong wiht the economic theory of the Democrats. They believe in taking the money from the middle class and giving it to the poor. SInce the poor spends a higher percent of their income, our GNP would increase. The problem is that the poor may be a little better off, but it would make it harder from being anything else, but poor. It would destroy the middle class though. That the plan from teh democrats might make a better national economy, but a lot worse of for the average individual economy. I found out there was a paradox thought up during the depression that describe this. I don’t remember it’s name, but it says that if one person saves, it’s good for the individual, but if everyone saves, it’s temporarily bad for the nation. The key word is temporarily. That’s why the government always created situations that would incourage irresponsible behavior. THe worse of all is to lower the interest rate. If we had decent interest rates, more people would save and we wouldn’t have this rollercoaster of an economy. People don’t understand how the stock market works, and I have warn people of this. Most logical people know there will be a crash coming soon. THe stock market boom is not from anything organic, but rather from all the retirement plans. When the baby boomer retire, they would start moving their money else where. When that happens, the stocks would drop. The government is doing everything to prevent it. Worse is to tell people not to save and put all your money in stocks to stay ahead of inflation. YOu have alsways said the government is stealing from us, by purposefully devaluing our dollar. They government is purposefully creating situations where we chase the next investment boom, to enrich the few.
Lizzie asks…
What’s the answer to this Buddhist koan (story)?
(I’VE INCLUDED THE STORY IN ITS ENTIRETY, OR YOU CAN JUST READ MY SUMMARY OF IT)
SUMMARY: An emperor has a revelation. He realizes there is no special point to his life, and now he feels free. Now, having opinions about life pained him – he saw them as walls. He did what was necessary out of duty and didn’t mourn his old certainties, but he lacked delight. He KNEW there had to be more to life than the freedom of pointlessness. So, he sought hints from the world. He realized he felts remorse for murders, he also sought advice from great scholars, yet advice didn’t seem to touch what he was looking for – he sought a feeling. The final lines read:
“Then the emperor heard of a sage from India. The man was himself a legend; it was said that it had taken him three years to make his way over the seas. The emperor knew nothing about the sea, but he imagined waves as the grass of the steppes in a high wind. He tried thinking of China as an ocean that he passed through, and nomads as pirates with horses. Though his own obligations prevented him from undertaking such journeys, he respected this kind of solitary accomplishment.”
WHAT IS THE ANSWER? I feel exactly like the emperor felt right now, yet I don’t have an answer.
FULL STORY:
“Bodhidharma’s Vast Emptiness”
Emperor Wu had two unusual experiences that changed his life. These essentially inward events led him to certain achievements that are remembered today, more than a millennium after his death. The first experience happened when his armies had to repel an invasion of horsemen from the northwest. The horsemen carried with them whatever they owned, and they weren’t afraid to die. The emperor had himself ascended to the throne in the standard way, by overthrowing the previous, weakened monarch, and he believed that he understood the riders. To steady his troops he visited the front lines and sat in the firelight on a small hill. This is when the emperor had his first peculiar experience.
Banners whipped loudly overhead and the wind felt as though it were inside his chest, tearing and banging. Something of the desert’s tedious immensity was conveyed to him. The wind cleansed him of any anxiety and also took away other things the solidity of which he had never questioned before. It took away his august rank and his name. He stopped planning, and he also stopped thinking about the outcome of the battle. When everything he usually depended upon was gone, he knew immediately what to do. In the predawn, just before the nomads liked to attack, he sent horsemen into the center of their camp and immediately pulled them back again. As the pursuit came, the center of his line kept falling back. The nomads rode into the vacuum he had opened and he closed on them from both sides.
After his return, while the ministers celebrated, the emperor went into the garden to be alone. On the hillside, he had felt quite certain that he was going to win. At that moment, in the wind and the vast land, he was small and unimportant, and this sense of his unimportance allowed him to be clear about what needed to be done. Being important now seemed to him to be just a prejudice that confined him.
Once he forgot about having a special point to his life, he felt remarkably free for an emperor. There were some complications. On certain days he considered leaving his room but couldn’t find a reason to. He still gave interviews at court before dawn but was sometimes beset by a sense of unreality. Shedding his old beliefs had not been so hard. He hadn’t done anything to achieve his new way of seeing things; it was a gift from wind and war. Having opinions about life — ideas about being an emperor, about his own dignity and the motives of his ministers, having to dislike this person and admire that one — pained him now; he could feel these familiar attitudes as walls crowding around him. Yet some understanding, he was certain, eluded him. He did what was necessary out of duty and didn’t mourn his old certainties, but he lacked delight. There had to be more to life than the freedom of pointlessness.
The emperor sought hints from the world. He noticed that he had remorse about the murders involved in his ascent to the throne. His qualms, as he thought of them, were the beginning of a new curiosity about his own life. At the same time he began to entertain famous teachers who passed through. Sometimes they were helpful. They usually praised him and gave carefully bland advice, often involving diets. Sometimes it was even good advice, but the question he had was something like a feeling — a mingling of excitement and uneasiness hard to formulate — and advice didn’t seem to touch it.
Then the emperor heard of a sage from India. The man was himself a legend; it was said that it had taken him three years to make his way over the seas. The emperor knew nothing about the sea, but he imagined waves as the grass of t

A long answer with a somewhat biased view – of life:
Being an emperor, he has much in terms of materials and of accomplishments, but what does it all mean?
The emperor detached his emotions from the battle and won it by inflicting anxiety and doubt upon his enemies in their camps right before the confrontation. Thus, his perception of reality has shifted from confined, emotional, solid certainty to that of empty, calm, surreal clarity. (Like zooming out of the map to get a better grasp of the surroundings.)
Praises, acknowledgments, appreciations even satisfactions might please him, for a short while. However, like any other, pleasant feeling also passes and quiets down The conflict is that he yarns for a feeling, but understands that such feeling is unreal like his accomplishments in life.
The story of the Indian sage earned his respect as he could identify the situation with his own, having to cross vast trek of emptiness — of sea, of land, of life or of time. It is the full realization of how impossible all difficulties might seem at their times, but also how small the events are as oppose to the vastness and fruitlessness of life. Yet the sage endured it on his own effort.
It is the acceptance of the extremely impossible nature and the extremely empty nature of these accomplishments. I suppose the word “humility” would be fitting for the answer here.
